Onbiased Blog: Consel Wars

Updated: May 5, 2023

If you play video games, you've come across this question multiple times. Playstation or Xbox? It's one of the most controversial and toxic questions you could ask. But people take the bait and will start debating between the two. Each one has its strong points and its weak points. This comes from someone who owns both consoles and has experience using both platforms during their seasons. It's Regginite from My Unbiased Opinion bringing you another Unbiased blog. Grab some snacks, and kick your feet up cause we are locked in. This is my perspective on the ongoing console wars.

First, let's acknowledge Nintendo and PC having a foot in this race…(Jeopardy music). Alright, that's enough of that. (LOL)

But we wouldn't be here in the gaming world without the OGs. Do you remember Atari, Super Nintendo, and Game cube? Sorry, that's as far as I can remember, besides the pac-man/pac a rat and Tetris arcade machines you'd see in movie theaters, drug stores, and of course, the arcade. But they were the beginning; in 1994 Sony created a branch called Playstation and created their first console. Beforehand Sony worked alongside Nintendo in building components for their console, the Super NES. After a few years, Sony wanted to build their console and platform. Since then, PlayStation has made 5 video game consoles, two handheld systems, an online service, and many magazines.

When you think of PlayStation, you think of its best moments: the PlayStation 2 and 3, along with the memories that come with it. Playing games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sly Cooper, NBA Street, Madden NFL, GTA San Andreas, Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed, Def Jam, Resident Evil, and the list goes on with nostalgic heavy hitters. But with those good times come bad times. Remember the memory card issue. Not being able to save your progress back in the day was brutal; parents would not leave the PlayStation on throughout the day. Having a memory card makes you rich in the eyes of your peers, let alone having wireless controllers. Let us remember the struggle of cleaning your console. Children had to become upper echelon cleaners; handkerchief + hot breath + droplets of rubbing alcohol with a bit of prayer will get your PlayStation working.

Going to the repairman was too much work unless you knew one, but even that was a risk. But as children, we knew if it breaks, it's over; mama isn't buying you another one, and some people didn't care about the significance of the PlayStation. The console is a fragile device, yet you still hear stories of people dropping it, stepping on it, and smashing it. Don't believe me? Look up videos of angry girlfriends breaking the PS4 and PS5 for some attention. It's nothing against you but why would you destroy something that has brought me joy for many years? Us boyfriends have never tried to hurt you in such ways. If you take my PS5 controller, I'm taking your makeup kit. #eyeforaneye

Playstation is now on the fifth console, PS5. One of the most coveted devices in the world with heavy hitters like God of War, Horizon, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, NBA 2k, and GTA. (Yes, those last three are on all platforms, but they're advertised more on PlayStation). Sony also has PlayStation Plus, a subscription service where you can play older games from previous models and play them on your current model digitally for just a couple of dollars a month. Sony looks to have some good qualities, but every company has ways of finessing consumers. First off, there's no refund policy for PlayStation; PlayStation has common occurrence of experiences game crashes when a new high-profile game is released, sony's web browser, fragile controllers, and of course, hacked accounts. With all things considered, PlayStation makes a compelling case as to "who's the best," but that's none of my business (Kermit sipping tea).

Now that we finished conversing about the oversized router… The PlayStation, lets turn to the other side and discuss the freezer box…mean Xbox. Where do I start? Microsoft wanted to get in on the action and made their branch for video game production in 2001. The official Xbox was released in 2001 and beat sales compared to Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Gamecube. Then in 2002, they launched Xbox live; an online service allowing players to play games without a broadband connection. So out the gate they were already competing with the big dogs. Sure Xbox live was paid compared to the other online services but it was proven that Xbox had better servers and a party chat. Not to mention Xbox had a heavy hitter called Halo that had a vice grip lock on people. Xbox's big hitters were Halo, Gear of War, Forza Horizon, and Fable. Fast forward to 2022 and Halo and Forza seem to be the only exclusive titles that are keeping Xbox in discussion (along with Game Pass).

Game Pass continues to be Microsoft's selling point, allowing consumers to play games for free through their service for only about 12 dollars a month (depending on the subscription package). The game pass is good, especially when trying out games you're unsure about. If you like the game, you'll keep playing if you don't, you can just delete it and not have to worry about spending 60 dollars for a game you didn't enjoy. What Xbox has done in recent years is promote their product as sort of an "all-purpose console." A device that provides all forms of entertainment for all people; games, movies, tv shows, and live streaming. I know there will be people condemning Xbox's method and saying "where's the video games?" but in recent months, Xbox has been buying out studios known to be "PlayStation prodigies," such as Bethesda and Activision. Could this mean games such as Call of Duty and Doom will be Xbox exclusives? Will next year be the year that Xbox capitalizes on its investments? Will Playstation's new projects underwhelm? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z… sorry wrong blog post. Whatever your preference is with each respective company, know… yall some weebs for that. Support the product when it's good not the company when they start reaching for money.
